Our user asked: "Is it ok for a child to receive ultrasound over the growth plates of bones if they are still growing?"

Ask a PT Response: "The consensus in the PT world is that ultrasound over a growth plate of a child who is growing is contraindicated. This is mainly based on animal research which demonstrated inhibition/damage to the epiphyseal plate following high-intensity ultrasound. More research is needed on this topic and on human tissue. I personally wouldn't perform ultrasound over a growth plate. There are a variety of other options available. ie. manual therapy, iontophoresis, etc."
