My husband is a bodybulider and recently had a violent muscle spasm affecting his rhomboid. This was also complicated with the nerves being pinched and numbness in his pointer finger. It has been 2 weeks and there have been improvements. He tried to lift weights today and the was significant lose of strength. Is this normal? What is the average time to be fully healed? Can you recommend some exercises and/or stretches that he can do at home or at the gym?

Thank you for your time,
Jennifer Insinga

Hi Jennifer,
The rhomboid muscle is innervated by the dorsal scapular nerve (C5). Often times the region where the rhomboids is located would be affected when there are disc or other problems in the neck which could affect the C5 or other nerves. For C5 involvement there may or may not be associated weakness at the rhomboid, levator scapulae, teres major, serratus anterior, pectoralis major, rotator cuff muscles and biceps. If someone is experiencing such weakness, spasms/pain, and numbness it is recommended that all activities which aggravate the condition be stopped and medical attention obtained. Your physician or physical therapist will be better able to determine the severity of injury and come up with the best plan of care for your husband.
