Our user asked: "Hello, I am considering changing my career. I'd like to explore opportunities in physcal therapy. But do not know much about that field. What are the educational requirements? And what is the job like? Would it be possible for me to observe someone to ascertain what that job is like? Thanks"
Ask a PT Response: "A career in physical therapy is both enjoyable and rewarding. Most PT schools are now offering Doctorates in Physical Therapy degrees and requires an undergraduate degree. Therefore, the total education required is around 7 years on average. The easiest route for applying to a PT school is to have an undergrad degree in the sciences. Schools will vary on some prerequisites for admission so you will have to check with the schools which you are interested in. I find my job as a PT very rewarding. There are many options in regards to which setting you could work in ie. outpatient orthopedics, sportsmedicine, pediatrics, inpatient hospital, nursing home, home health, etc.. You will have to discover what settign you like best. I definitely think it would be a great idea for you to shadow with a PT for a day to see if this is something you are interested in doing. Most PT's are very receptive to having someone interested in our profession shadow them for a day. If you have additional questions you can visit our forum and see what other individuals have been asking. http://www.cyberpt.com/ptforum/forum_topics.asp?FID=4 I hope this helps and thanks for using CyberPT."
