Our user asked: "all started when i was 17, had shoulder pain, had mri or mir scan , whatever its called and said nothing was wrong. went and came back at 22 then went again after doing exercises to help shoulder now its back again. why is it coming and going like this ? also i looked on the net and read about rotator cuff, is that the problem, do i always need to do rotator cuff exercises for life ? and if so how often, how many times a day . i play basketball so i dont know if that helps you at all."

Ask a PT Response: "I can't really tell you what is going on with your shoulder without actually seeing and evaluating you. Injury to the rotator cuff is a common injury at the shoulder and exercises can be performed to help maintain or improve the health of this muscle group. I usually recommend my to my patients to perform the exercises I prescribe them daily for 1-2x's. Are you performing the shoulder exercises which were recommended to you in the past again? Perhaps, since you are experiencing a recurrence of this injury, it may be a good idea to seek out medical attention from a PT or ortho to determine what exactly is contributing to your condition and what may be done to help your shoulder improve and prevent further incidences. Best of luck to you."
