Ask a PT 156 Posts Ask a PT Response: "I am sorry to hear about your sister. However, I am gald to hear that her baby appears to be fine and that she is beginning to recover from her condition. With conditions that involve neurological impairment, one needs to be careful not to push an individual too hard or it could set him or her back. Exercise should be performed to tolerance and gradually increased over time. Working with a home physical therapist might be extremely beneficial for her at this time especially since she is pregnant and her body will continue to change. The therapist can help develop a plan of care which will assist her in regaining her strength, endurance, balance and function. Meanwhile, I'd recommend your family encourage her to perform a little more activity everyday to her tolerance. For example, maybe walking with assistance around the house for a little while and then increasing the time slightly everyday (not just to get up to go to the bathroom or couch). Also performing lower level exercises when sitting (the PT can help develop this program) can be beneficial as well. I hope this was helpful and please feel free to contact me should you have further questions." |
