If he had to cut your iliopectineal bursa then it probably will take a LONGER time to recover as this bursa is the largest bursa in the body and functions to decrease friction between the iliopsoas muscle and the superior pubic ramus of the hip. So you can imagine if it is cut it will take awhile to heal. When this bursa is irritated hip extension can be painful and pain can be experienced down the front of the thigh to the knee. Often times if the iliopsoas muscle is tight or if there is a myofascial dysfunction there, the bursa can become more irritated. Strethcing, soft tissue mobilization/myofascial release and postural training can help with managing this condition. Stretching the ITB is a good stretch, but patients with this condition should also be performing a hip flexor stretch as well. Sufficient flexibility at the hip flexors can reduce the amount of pressure on the bursa. Strengthening can be performed with light resistance and higher reps as well to not only the involved side but the uninvolved side as well. |

It sounds like I have iliopsoas bursitisof the hip. My surgeon said he had to cut the bursa when surgery was done. I wish I knew how long it's going to take to heal. The pain radiates down into my front and outer thigh and also around the knee.

Are you referring to pes anserine bursitis or trochanteric bursitis. Stretching, strengthening, etc. will vary depending on which bursitis your surgeon states you have. |

I had a total hip replacement in Oct. 2008. I am 58 but I recovered very fast as I am a thin person and was in good physical condition at the time of my surgery. I have just exercised modertly and do muscle stretching every day. I ride horses but that has never had any adverse effects on my hip. After about 5 mos. post surgery, I started getting a shooting or burning pain in my front thigh and around my knee, never in the same place. The pain is not severe but it makes me limp or at least favor my leg when I walk. I was told by my orthopedic surgeon that I has a "touch of Bursitis" and gave me an injection that didn't help at all. Over the last few months the condition has just seemed to come and go. I try the IT band stretching exercises that my PT gave me but it's still there. I'm getting really tired of it and want to be back to normal again after almost a year now. If there are any other exercises I should be doing, I'd love to hear them. I use ice on my hip when it hurts but I am allergic to Ibuprofen so I don't take anti-inflamatories unless I absolutely have to. Should I be trying to strenghten my leg and hip muscles more or worry about stressing the bursa? I tend to stay away from the cardio that I used to do (eliptical and bike riding) because that seems to make it worse. I can't "rest" it any more unless I do "nothing" and that is not feasable for me right now.
I have exercised all my life, know what my limits are and I'm willing to try anything to get rid of this aliment. Please let me know what would be best for me.
