Our user asked: "I have been very sedentary for the last 2 years working from my home and experiencing some issues with arthritis, etc. In the last 2 months, I have taken a part-time job that requires my working out of the home. I park in a lot and walk about 1.5 blocks to my place of employment. I am finding that I am NOT reconditioning to this walk. I used to walk 45 minutes a day and that being nearly a 3 mile walk. I am no stranger to the activity, just fell off the wagon. I am not feeling my body bounce back, though. My muscles feel tight, sore, and even by the end of the walk, I don't feel loosened up and find myself huffing and puffing. I feel this to be extremely rudimentary in terms of my activity and would like to start doing more, but the lack of improvement and feeling better I know will be a hindrance not a help. I am 46 years old. Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong, or what more I could do?"

Ask a PT Response: "Given what you have described, it may be a good idea to consult with your MD first prior to beginning any exercise routine. For beginners, it is always recommended to start out slowly with activity level and progress as tolerated. Stretching, diet and sufficient rest are other factors to consider. Here is a link to an article which I found had a lot of useful tips: http://exercise.about.com/od/exerciseforbeginners/Exercise_for_Beginners.htm
Perhaps joining a gym and working with a personal trainer could be another option as well. Best of luck to you."
