Ask a PT 156 Posts Ask a PT Response: "Sorry for the delayed response but I wanted to consult with an occupational therapist who had experience with elbow braces before I wrote back. From what you wrote, we both believe that your boyfriend should have his arm fully rehabilitated and cleared by the MD, PT or OT before returning to bull riding since this is such a physical sport and there is an extremely high risk for reinjury. He may also need to work on other areas as well such wrists, legs, core etc.. since he has not been riding for awhile now. You are absolutely correct when you mentioned that an immobile elbow would lead to additional stresses at the shoulder and rotator cuff with an activity such as bull riding. Therefore, the OT recommended a brace that would allow mobility at the elbow for both flexion/extension and pronation/supination. She did not feel comfortable with recommending a specific brace as she has not worked with your boyfriend but she does advise that your boyfriend consult with his MD, PT or OT to determine a proper brace for him as the healthcare provider will know his condition the best. Thank you for using CyberPT." |
