Just wondering if any of you fellow PT professionals have any treatment ideas for a 32-year-old female patient with severe ataxia due to encephalopathy. I am seeing her in an outpatient setting. I have tried weight-bearing trunk exercises such as supine bridging, quadruped and tall kneeling with perturbations. As far as gait training, I have been weighing her down with 2 weighted vests and 4# ankles weights and hanging weights on her rolling walker. I've also tried having her walk in the parallel bars, but she is so anxious due to her severe ataxia. I am planning on trying partial body weight support treadmill training and possibly aquatic exercise (if I can get her into the pool safely), but I'm hitting a dead end as to what else to try with her. Any ideas would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Alyson, PT
