Our user asked: "My boyfriend fractured his radius in two places and cracked his ulna about 2-3 inches below his elbow and then re-broke it this fall. The fractures are healed, but his arm is still weak. He's starting to lift weights to regain his strength, but he rides broncs in rodeos and is going to start riding again in the next month. He's looking for a brace to wear on his elbow to stabilize, support, and protect it but is unsure what type of brace would be appropriate. The arm he broke is his riding arm, so his hand is tied down to the horse, and there's a huge amount of stress put on his arm. He thinks he wants a brace that's going to keep his elbow fairly immobile, but do you think that would be bad for his shoulder and rotator cuff? We're also concerned that the sleeve braces might not provide enough support or protection. Any suggestions about what type of brace he should wear would be greatly appreciated!"

Ask a PT Response: "Sorry for the delayed response but I wanted to consult with an occupational therapist who had experience with elbow braces before I wrote back. From what you wrote, we both believe that your boyfriend should have his arm fully rehabilitated and cleared by the MD, PT or OT before returning to bull riding since this is such a physical sport and there is an extremely high risk for reinjury. He may also need to work on other areas as well such wrists, legs, core etc.. since he has not been riding for awhile now. You are absolutely correct when you mentioned that an immobile elbow would lead to additional stresses at the shoulder and rotator cuff with an activity such as bull riding. Therefore, the OT recommended a brace that would allow mobility at the elbow for both flexion/extension and pronation/supination. She did not feel comfortable with recommending a specific brace as she has not worked with your boyfriend but she does advise that your boyfriend consult with his MD, PT or OT to determine a proper brace for him as the healthcare provider will know his condition the best. Thank you for using CyberPT."
