I have been experiencing a lot of pain in my buttock which would also travel down my leg. It developed for no apparent reason. People have told me that this is called sciatica. Can physical therapy help me with this condition? It has been bothering me for over a week now.

Experiencing pain in your buttock with radiating pain down your leg is in fact called sciatica. Basically, sciatica is a general term that is used quite often by many indivduals, including health care professionals, to describe pain which radiates down the leg. It is quite often associated with conditions such as a herniated disc in the lumbar spine (low back)or a dysfunction of the piriformis muscle (a muscle in your buttock) where it irritates the sciatic nerve. This condition is quite often treated by physical therapists with results that can be promising at times. Please consult with a MD or PT for further information and treatment of this condition.
