Ask a PT 156 Posts Ask a PT Response: "You are correct to progress from crutches to a cane. Given your surgery and your condition it would not be recommended to utilize no assistive device immediately after being discharged from your brace and crutches especially if you will be going on vacation. The cane or single crutch can be utilized on the side where you did not have the surgery (good side) and should be advanced at the same time you advance the affected lower extremity. The cane is fitted to your height by you standing up straight and having the handle of the cane come up to your wrist level. If you begin experiencing increase pain because you have been on your feet for awhile definitely take a break and get off your feet. If you have any question, please do not hesitate to contact your therapist even if you are on vacation. Have a great vacation and thanks again for using CyberPT." |
