Ask a PT Response: "An x-ray is utilized to determine if there are fractures or any bony abnormalities or alignment issues. It would not be able to determine if you have sustained an upper trapezius strain. Given what you describe I would not be very prone to vaguely give you a physical therapy diagnosis of upper trapezius strain. Having difficulty with opening a jar requires forearm pronation/supination and could involve injury to the biceps long head which assists with elbow flex/forearm supination/shoulder flexion. Injury to the biceps long head can present with pain at the anterior aspect of the shoulder with activities such as reaching, lifting and opening doors/jars etc. My recommendation for you would be to consult with a PT so that he or she can conduct an evaluation to determine what may be the cause of your pain and develop a plan of care specific to you based on the findings. Good luck."
