Our user asked: "I broke my Humorous near my elbow on a sports event (martial arts) . It has been five months and I'm still have problems with my elbow range of motion. I only have about 25 degres f movement on my elbow.My shoulder and wrist are one hundred percent. I'm having problems with muscle guarding and spams. Could I use some sort of elbow brace to help me with that or a good exercise to do for relaxing the muscles in that area of the elbow? Is exercising everyday too much? and wich type? I do not have insurance, so I work it at home. Did I mention that it hurts a lot when I try to bent it or straight it. any info will help Thank you a lot."
 
Ask a PT Response: "It is not uncommon to have a loss of range of motion along with strength issues at the elbow and forearm after this type of injury. Once the fracture is healed and has set properly, participation in physical therapy and performing a home exercise program is key to achieving increase range of motion and return to prior level of function. For my patients that have range of motion deficits at the elbow I would instruct them on performing elbow flexion and extension stretches by having them use the other arm. I often woud utilize a hot pack along with a hand weight to maintain constant stress so as to help my patient stretch the elbow into extension as well. I would also prescribe strengthening exercises which would have my patient work on achieving strength gains in the newly achieved range of motion. Range of motion devices could also be utilized to help achieve additional range of motion as well. http://www.getmotion.com/pc_elbow.htm , http://www.dynasplint.com/type/elbow.php . etc (there are many other companies which make these devices).
