Our user asked: "I jammed my left index finger wrestling about 3 months ago. x ray showed a small bone chip. I have been buddy tapping and wrapping on and off for much of this time. ROM is good and the only challeng is making a tight fist at the very end. There is still a bulge on the left side of the middle knuckle. Questions:1. what is the bulge and is it permanent 2. what is expected total heal time (3 months in now) to have normal appearance and function 3. do i still need to wrap and what ROM excercise should i do?"
Ask a PT Response: "Did you you see an orthopedic MD? If so what did he have to say? Does he recommend that that the chip be removed? I would assume that the bulging at your 3rd carpometacarpal articulation (middle knuckle) could be the bone chip it self or inflammation. I'd recommend you consult with your doctor to see if this is going to be permanent. Three months should be an appropriate amount of time for an injury like this to heal. If you haven't sought further medical attention, it may be a good time now to do so. As far as wrapping - do you mean splinting it to another finger? Given that it has now been three months I don't know if it is going to still do any good. I would consult with your ortho now to obtain a plan of care appropriate for you." |
