Our user asked: "(First I am a U/LCS sufferer not a Physical T.) As stated on your section on UCS you stated: "When treating patients with UCS the shortened muscles must be restored before embarking on training of the weakened muscles. This is based on Sherrington's Law of reciprocal inhibition which states that when one muscle is shortened or tightened its opposite muscle relaxes" ....I have a question : Does this mean you stretch any shortened muscles, then afterwards strengthen weak muscles in the 'SAME' therapy session... OR you start a stretching routine of only stretching tight /short muscles; then and only then (maybe days or weeks later) do you 'begin' a strengthening routine? Can the "Sherrington's Law " apply to doing both stretch 'first' then strengthen in one session/day? Thank you VERY much for your help!"

Ask a PT Response: "For my patients that have this issue the majority of the treatment session is focused on stretching, postural training and manual therapy. Gentle strengthening in the desired position/posture can be incorporated as well but isn't strongly emphasized until later on. So in regards to your question, I do both, but I take care to only incorporate strengthening in the corrected posture. I hope this helps. If you have problems, it may be a good idea to work one on one with a PT so that he or she can address your specific needs."
