Our user asked: "I am having a low back/hip pain and had a question. I have been doing the Wendler 5/3/1 weight lifting program for a little over a year now with great results. With this program you progress in weight on the bar for three weeks and the take the forth week as a de-load. You then start the next month adding 5 lbs to the upper body lifts and 10 to the lower. Last week was the third week and I did the deadlift with no problem. The next day I had a sharp pain right around the crest of the illium. This pain lasted for three days. This week is the de-load week so yeasterday I did the deadlift with much lighter weight(140 vs 210) and today I have a milder version of that same pain. I have already planned to back off the weight on deadlifts and just keep progressing on the other lifts. But I do not see this as a good sign getting the pain with the lighter weight. Is there a way that I can tell if this is muscle or nerve related pain?"
Ask a PT Response: "It is probably a good idea that you have backed off. Pain at the region of the iliac crest is not commonly associated with nerve related pain. Given the task you were performing, muscle injury would be more likely. If your pain persists despite taking a period for rest, you may want to consult with you MD or PT to rule out more serious injuries."
