SI joint/glute pain

   Our user asked: "Hi! I have been having pain along my left SI joint, occasionally down to the sitting bone and even mid thigh. It is triggered by walking up hill, flexing my left hip for some time (as in tying shoe laces for an entire Kindergarten class), or any kind of stretch or pull of the hamstring. The pain does not come immediately but usually in the hours that follow. I have had chiropractic and osteopathic adjustments, physical therapy (made me stretch that hamstring until the pain became unbearable), cortisone injection into the SI joint, massage, acupuncture... nothing helped. MRI and X-rays are normal. It feels as if the left iliac bone is out of whack--although nobody has mentioned it. But again, nobody has been able to help me in 2 years. Ideas? Suggestions?"
Ask a PT Response: "Very tough to help you out without physically examining you. Did the MRI rule out bulging discs at your lumbar spine. It seems like flexed positions exacerbate your condition which could be indicative of possible neural tension. Have your other healthcare providers rule out piriformis involvement as well? Have all other issues been examined and addressed ie. weakness (hips, abs, back, quads, hams), join mobility (ankles, hips, SI, lumbar spine, knee), flexibility (hams, quads, calves, ITB/Glut, piriformis, hip flexors), posture, etc.? If you are able to, I'd give PT another try. Seek out a PT who has experience in manual therapy ie: COMT or NAIOMT . Someone with this experience might be better able to help you given their manual skills. Best of luck to you."
