Our user asked: "Greetings esteemed physical therapists :) I have been scheduled to have Tibial Tubercle Transfer surgery to correct the position of my patella. I have a long and varied history of injuries, including chronic dislocation, etc. in one knee, and a similar, but milder history with the other. Anyway, I know that you cannot diagnose my medical condition and would not ask you to without a proper consultation, access to my history, CATs, MRIs, etc. My question is simply this: Is is possible to significantly re-position / realign or otherwise improve the tracking of a patella (i.e. get tracking properly in the trochlear groove) using taping, physical therapy and other conservative, non-surgical means? I would just really like to know if there is even a possibility of this before going through with such a radical* surgery. (It seems radical to me anyway! ;) Thanks in advance for any information you can provide!"
Ask a PT Response: "Have you had taping done before and have you participated in PT in the past as well? Participation in PT is often perfomed prior to surgery. ROM, strengthening, stabilization, stretching, postural training, functional training, PF taping, etc are performed in PT to assist with achieving improved mechanics at the PF joint."
