Our user asked: "i tryed to move up in weight on over head shoulder machine at the YMCA, and i think i irritated the upper back and shoulder muscle, but why the puffiness in the front over the collar bone."

Ask a PT Response: "I sounds like you may have strained your Upper Trapezius muscle. If you lifted too much, too soon or lifted it incorrectly, you may have strained the muscle. There can be swelling and tenderness with this. Rest, icing and gentle massage/stretching usually do the trick. But you want to be sure you did not injure your neck or vertebrae. If you have any of the following symptoms, be sure to get it checked out right away by your physician or Physical Therapist: pain persists more than a few days, limitations in mobility of your neck or shoulder that last more than a few days, any numbness, tingling or weakness in your arm or neck, increasing pain in neck, arm, or headache. For future workouts, be sure you are gradually increasing your resistance. Start with small increments, 5-10 pounds. Also, be sure you are using proper form while performing the exercise. Ask for assistance and the trainers at the YMCA would be glad to give you tips. Also, don't forget a warm-up and cool-down as part of your exercise routine.
I hope this is helpful and thank you for using CyberPT."
