Our user asked: "Please recommend some exercises for Mid IT Band Tendonitis. Thanks for your time."

Ask a PT Response: "The iliotibial band (ITB) is not a muscle but rather a layer of connective/fibrous tissue which runs down the outer side of the thigh and attaches to the outer side of the lower leg just underneath the outer knee joint line. This area can become tight and result in pain at the knee or compress various structues at the greater trochanter region (bump that you can feel on the side of your hip) thus resulting in irritation and pain. For individuals who have tightness or irritation secondary to problems with the ITB, stretching is often recommended. Examples of such stretches to the ITB can be found on the CyberPT video page: ie.

If you have any preexisting conditions or past surgeries such as a total hip replacement, than these stretches should not be performed. I would recommend you consult with your physician or physical therapist prior to beginning any kind of exercise. Thank you for using CyberPT."
