Our user asked: "I have recently started a regimen with a rehab trainer for chronic jumper's knee. They attach a stim device but and then while the current is still flowing, I perform exercises. Do you know what kind of stim machine this is? I think it is some sort of high voltage galvanic stim. Would I be able to do a squat while a typical galvanic machine was on? They are secretive about their methods. Otherwise I wouldn't ask.. Thanks for the help!"

Ask a PT Response: "Neuromuscular electrical stimulation is quite often utilized to assist with achieving gains with muscle strength in patients. I often would utilize e-stim with my patients in conjunction with having them perform squats, long arch quads, standing terminal knee extension etc to encourage strengthening with a functional activity. There are a variety of machines which can help accomplish this. The type of current which I most often utilize is a Russian or Hi Volt stim. I would recommend you obtain proper instruction/training from your therapist or the manufacturer if you are planning on obtaining a machine and performing exercises on your own at home. Thanks for using CyberPT."
