Our user asked: "I have tight hips and experience low back pain golfing & riding bicycle for 10+ miles. I have a Fuji Saratoga bike with slightly forward pedals, that allows me to place feet flat when I stop, rather than standard bike. I've had the bike for 2 yrs, but first experienced pain when I started riding trails, rather than just around town. A local bike store has recommended replacing bike. Before i spend $$$ again on bike, wanted professional opinion for best bike for me, age 61."
Ask a PT Response: "I am not an experience bike rider so I consulted with another therapist who is. She stated the bike you have looks like it is the type of bike only for pavement type road surfaces. There is no shock absorption if you want to ride on trails. That is probably why you have had pain when riding on the trails. She stated if you want to trail ride, you would need some type of trail/mountain bike, or hybrid bike with shock absorption.
I would also recommend that you work on core training and improving your flexibility to help minimize injuries when riding as well."
