Our user asked: "Hi, For the past three weeks I've had a fair amount of 'popping' in the back of my neck (especially in the nuchal area). I don't have any pain/tingling, but it's pretty annoying, so I find that I don't tend to move my neck as much. I have tried some basic stretching exercises, which seem to help, as does sleeping with a different pillow. I'm a student, so spend quite a bit of time reading and on the computer. The onset of this condition was fairly sudden, but I don't remember any injuries or strains. I have a feeling that my posture is to blame, but need to know whether or not I need to consult a specialist at this point and/or what I can do at home to help. If I do need to see someone, do you suggest a DPT or an orthopedist? Thanks!"
Ask a PT Response: "You mentioned that correcting your posture and utilizing a different pillow has helped with your condition. It is believed that popping occurs as a result of air being released from the joint. Are you experiencing any pain, numbness/tingling or any other symptoms along with the popping? If you are, it may be a good idea to seek out further medical attention from a PT or ortho."
