Our user asked: "Can you tell me if this is a generally accepted exercise for patients recovering from back surgery. If so, is some form of support or grip recommended?"
Ask a PT Response: "Sidestepping over foam rollers could help facilitate activation of the core muscles along with assisting in balance training and would not be an inappropriate exercise for a patient to perform. If the patient has significant pain or balance issues, this exercise probably should be performed later on in rehab or with railing or hand support. The therapist wouldn't want the patient to suddenly lose his or her balance an risk compromising the surgery. "
