Our user asked: "My orthopedist just stopped me from running, after 33 years, the last 4 1/2 years (8,200 miles) without missing a day. I'm on crutches, soon to have a hip replacement, and plan on speed walking as soon as possible. What exercises do you recommend for this pre-surgical period, and for after, to stay strong and avoid atrophy? I'm male, 77, 5'9", 150#. Thanks so much!! Richard Gross (on the northern California coast) pre-surgery period, as well as after? I'm 77 years old, male, 5'"

Ask a PT Response: "Sorry to hear that. Here is a great site which has exercises for a patient who has had a THA: http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/topic.cfm?topic=a00303 Best of luck to you with your surgery and with your recovery."
