Our user asked: "My mom has had muscle spasms in a muscle in her hip. It is now knotted up and is causing her extreme pain. She received an injection to break up the knot and it did not work. She is skeptical to try physical therapy. What can a PT do to break up a knot in the muscle? I'm assuming they can work out the muscle through exercises targeted to that specific muscle? Please let me know your suggestions. Thanks."
Ask a PT Response: "An injection by itself will more than likely not be enough to help with "breaking up the knot". The addition of physical therapy with her treatment could prove more beneficial. Participation in physical therapy could include ultrasound/modalities, soft tissue mobilization, stretching, strengthening, postural training, joint mobilization, etc. The PT will conduct an evaluation and assesment and determine what may be the best plan of care specific to her needs. If she is able to see a PT, she really doesn't have much to lose and a lot to gain. Best of luck to your mother."
