Our user asked: "Hi. I'm having a lot of calf pain. I'm actually going to a Physical Therapist for my knee (I dislocated it for the third time about a month ago), and on Thursday we did some exercises that included calf raises. I used to work out regularly before my injury, so I'm familiar with calf raises and I'm familiar with soreness, but it'd been a significant amount of time since I really worked out. Anyways, I felt good Thursday, and I had a little bit of pain on Friday, but Saturday and Sunday I could barely walk. If I touch my calf muscles with my hand and massage them, it's very painful. And I've been walking on my tip toes because it's too painful to walk regularly. I can't even really straighten my leg out to walk normally without the pain being too much. It feels really really tight. I'm getting concerned because I don't think it's soreness, I'm worried something happened."

Ask a PT Response: "Have you talked to your PT about ruling out a DVT? If not it may be a good idea. Otherwise, it sounds like you could have strained your calf muscles (gastroc/soleus). With a strain, rest and gentle stretching along with some soft tissue mobilization from your PT should help you recover. If your symptoms persist, definitely seek out further medical attention."
