Our user asked: "Is there a more powerful TENS unit then the ones that we usually have for our patients? My husband's physician in Milwaukee is referring him back to the pain doctor and is telling her to order a TENS unit. He has had then in the past and they did nothing for him. Should she write the script for a certain type of TENS unit? Any suggestions?"

Ask a PT Response: "As far as the TENS unit goes, I really don't know of anything else that is stronger than the TENS unit and is noninvasive. I have had patients that have had spinal cord stimulators implanted that have really helped. Check out http://www.medtronic.com/neuro/paintherapies/pain_treatment_ladder/pdf/1_patient_management.pdf - http://www.medtronic.com/neuro/paintherapies/pain_treatment_ladder/pdf/1_patient_management.pdf for more information on this. Otherwise Empi and Care Rehab are two common manufacturers of TENS units that we issue in our clinic."

TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, and is a drug free method of pain relief.
