Our user asked: I am 74 years old and I was doing somewhat strenuous strength training before getting a moderate case of shingles. I had had the shot and was prescribed acyclovir within 72 hours. The rash was on left torso and was gone within two weeks but I am going into my 7th month of PHN. I am concerned about whether I should be doing strenuous strength training. Am I possibly aggravating the nerve damage.? ?"

Ask a PT Response: "From my understanding antiviral medications will not be able to help with the pain. If strenuous exercise is what may have brought on the shingles 7 months ago then I would advise against it. It would probably be best to consult with your MD that you have been working with to treat this condition in regards to returning to strenuous strength training as he or she will be most familiar with your condition. Best of luck to you."
