Our user asked: "Hi, I have a hamstring strain and the bruise is huge. I only seem to feel it when I stretch or bend it all the way and I have a very slight limp when I walk. I am going on 9 days now after the strain happened (basketball game). My question is that the bruising seems to be in my calf now along with the very reddish-purple bruise that is just above the back of my knee. Is this normal?"

Ask a PT Response: "Sounds like you are doing better. The bruising in the back of your knee and calf are not abnormal. Seems like you pulled it pretty bad. The hamstrings connect to the top of your lower leg, that is how it is able to bend your knee. Continue to perform gentle stretches and maybe get someone to give you a massage to the hamstring and you should hopefully continue to improve. Avoid return to sport until you are fully recovered."
