Our user asked: "When do you start strengthening exercise to the affected hip with ORIF? Can you give me an exercise protocol for hip ORIF? Thanks"

Ask a PT Response: "We don't have a protocol for s/p ORIF. This is because each situation can vary and each surgical procedure can vary as well. Generally, a patient will most likely have a non-weightbearing or partial weightbearing status and progress to full weight bearing over time. In inpatient PT, the patient could perform low level exercises such as ankle pumps, quad sets, glut sets, hip abd/add ROM, etc, and undergo gait training with a standard walker. Aggressive strengthening exercise are generally not prescribed for the patient undergoing this procedure until the patient is able to tolerate full weightbearing. If you will be or have undergone an ORIF of the hip, I would recommend you contact your surgeon or PT for a consult to obtain a plan of care which is specific for your needs and current status. Good luck!"
