Our user asked: "I am a 38 year old healthy male who lifts weights four times a week and also stretches to increase flexibility. Upon squatting down to pick up an object which is on either side i tend to feel a pain in what i believe is the gluteus medius muscle. For example if I reach for an object on the floor on my left side (with my left hand)i experience a pain in my left hip. what stretches would relieve this? What is causing this pain?"

Ask a PT Response: "Without physically examining you I wouldn't be able to tell you what is going on. There are a multiple of things which could be causing this pain. Does squatting alone result in pain or does the reaching while in a squatted position result in pain? If you have pain as a result of the reaching while in a squatted position you may have some other issues going on as well ie, discs, nerve compression, etc. My suggestion to you would be to consult with a PT for him or her to conduct an evaulation to determine what may be the cause of your symptoms and what can be done to get rid of it. Sorry I couldn't have been of more assistance and thanks for using CyberPT."
