Our user asked: "I am wondering if someone can explain to me the differences in protocol for therapy after a hip ORIF compared to a total hip replacement? Are the exercises that can be performed the same? Does it matter if or when weights can be used and does one heal faster than the other or is one more effective than the other?"

Ask a PT Response: "The lower level mat exercises for a hip ORIF and a total hip replacement (THA) are very similiar. The biggest difference is with exercise progression. Often times after an ORIF, the surgeon will require that the patient have either a non weight bearing status or a partial weight bearing status. This precaution will, therefore, not allow for the patient to perform exercises which require weight bearing ie. calf/heel raises in standing, partial wall slides, etc. On the other hand, patients who have undergone a THA will usually have a weight bearing as tolerated status which will allow for the patient to perform exercises in weight bearing. I hope this clears things up. Thanks for using CyberPT."
