Our user asked: "I have just recently had a tibial osteotomy (dec 15th) and was ordered NOT to use my CPM unit immediately after surgery. Is that wrong? Wont that slow down my recovery time and allow scar tissue to form? My girlfriend had the same surgery and she was ordered to use her CPM unit within days, her recovery was within months.....please advise on what I should ask the doctor. Want a speedy recovery..."

Ask a PT Response: "The scientific evidence for the use of a CPM unit for the knee after surgery is mixed. Some studies support its use while other studies reveal that performing range of motion exercises for the knee achieves the same results. I was wondering when you will be allowed by your surgeon to utilize the CPM? You are correct that the CPM is generally utilized by patients almost immediately after surgery. Are you currently participating in physical therapy and performing a home exercise program as well?"
