Our user asked: "I have dislocated (posterior) my shoulder twice in the last three months while participating in athletic events. I want an athletic brace to wear while playing that can help prevent this from happening. Should I buy a compression brace or an instanbility brace. I was also wondering if I could get my doctor to prescribe it to me so that insurance could help with the cost."

Ask a PT Response: "Posterior shoulder dislocations are alot less common than anterior shoulder dislocations. There are quite a few braces out there for anterior shoulder dislocations which protects against excessive shoulder abduction and external rotation. Despite a brace, for any patients of mine who suffers from shoulder instability and has a history of dislocations, it is extremely important that my patients also work on increasing shoulder strength, stability and functional training in physical therapy so as to minimize recurrence of injury. Therefore, if you are not seeing a PT, it may be a good idea to see one so that he or she can develop a plan of care that will best meet your specific needs and deficits."
