Our user asked: "I have had pain in my hip flexor area for about a month now. It only aches when I run, it's fine with every other activity. However, I do notice when I foam roll the area, I get a tingling sensation down my quad to my knee. Is the tingling a nerve issue or a result of the strained hip flexor? My doctor told me I had a groin pull, and didn't seem concerned when I tried to explain the tingling (But he also didn't know what a foam roller was) but it is concerning to me. Thanks."

Ask a PT Response: "How is your hip doing now? Tingling is more than likely associated with a nerve being compressed or stressed. The femoral nerve or other nerves which branch off from the femoral nerve may be compressed when you are utilizing the foam roller to target your hip flexors. Have you tried adjusting or modifying your your position on the roller (more prone, more lateral, more medial) to see if you continue to experience tingling? If you continue to experience tingling despite the modifications, it may not be a good idea to continue with this exercise as it may result in further injury to your hip. Seeing a PT may be the next step if your hip pain continues to occur with running as the therapist will be able to determine what is contributing to your condition (ie. running mechanics, flexibility issues, etc.)."
