Our user asked: "I've had trouble with the right side of my back and shoulder now for almost a year. The main source for the pain seems to come from the rhomboid area of my shoulder. I think the muscle may be torn because when I try to do suggested strengthening exercises for it the other muscles involved in the movement hurt like hell and I can't feel anything coming from the rhomboid region itself. When I pinch my shoulder blades together I can feel the flexing of the muscles in the rhomboid region on the left side but the right side almost feels numb like there's nothing there at all."

Ask a PT Response: "Do you know how you may have sustained this injury? Do you have any neck problems? The rhomboid muscle is innervated by the dorsal scapular nerve (C4, C5). Injury to this nerve can result in the symptoms you described. Since you have been experiencing this condition for over a year now, it may be a good idea to seek further medical attention in order to determine what may be causing your problem and to obtain a plan of care."
