Our user asked: "I had Rotator cup surgery 9/1/10.My doctor says I now need PT.The problem there is a $400.00 deductable whic I do not have so I would like to know if there are exercises that I could do at home.I now do an exercise where I use a pulley to pull my right arm up as far as I can and also the pendulum where I swing my arm in one direction and then in the other direction and the towel exercise where I act like I am drying my back are there any other exercise that You can recomend?"
 
Ask a PT Response: "Did you have a rotator cuff repair of the supraspinatus tendon on 9/01/10? There are 4 muscles that make up the rotator cuff.  For most of my patients that have had this surgery that are over 3 1/2 months they are doing very well and on their way to a full recovery. For some general ideas of exercise progression and goals (dependent on size of tear), you can take a look at our sample protocol page: http://www.cyberpt.com/cyberptprotocols.asp - http://www.cyberpt.com/cyberptprotocols.asp . Check with your surgeon to see how large the tear was, but since he is only now recommending therapy, I would probably guess it was quite a large tear. Also check with him to make sure he doesn't have any limitations or precautions for you. You definitely don't want to do too much too soon. The exercises you are performing minus the towel stretch are commonly presribed to my patients in the beginning stages of therapy. Other exercises I may have them perform in the early stages of therapy include GH isometric strengthening, seated self GH PROM on table, scapular retraction strengthening, finger walk/slide up wall, etc..
