Our user aksed: "It has been about 3 weeks since I've sprained my ankle, and I have gone to an orthopedic since then, and had x rays taken, no fractures were seen, and was diagnosed with grade 2 sprain. I've been doing plantar and dorsiflexion without a problem as well as eversion. Inversions are a bit tender but I can make circles with my ankle ok. I've also been doing one legged balance as well and riding the stationary bike to build some muscle. Well, I cannot afford to see a PT right now due to coverage issues and wanted to know if there are other exercises you recommend for three weeks into a sprain? I also wanted to know if its normal that it seems like the ankle gets better for the most part but there are days where the ankle just feels worse, the progress seems to go back and forth its frustrating, am I doing something wrong? I've also noticed that when I compare my injured ankle to my good one, I can see and feel a hard lump over the outer aspect of my injured one, is that scar tissue? Should I be concerned or its normal and it'll go away on its own?"

Ask a PT Response: "Here is a link to a standard rehab protocol for various grades of ankle sprains: http://tiny.cc/0c9an - http://tiny.cc/0c9an . Again please keep in mind that protocols are meant to be utilized in conjunction with attending Physical Therapy. As far as having good days and bad days, that is not uncommon. Your ankle is pretty sensitive and any added stress from daily living could influence it. The hard lump at the lateral aspect of your ankle could be edema or a contusion and should go away. It would probably be best to contact the doctor you saw and get his thoughts on that. Best of luck to you with your recovery."
