Our user asked: "From an MRI I have been told I have torn cartilage in my left knee. Possibly I might need surgery but in the meantime, could you give me some exercises that might help in this regard?"

Ask a PT Response: "For my patients who have conditions similiar to yours and are awaiting surgery, I would focus on strengthening and range of motion with them. Depending on severity of condition resulting in pain and functional limitations, treatment may vary. For my patients that may only tolerate low level exercises I would have them perform staitionary bike, seated self knee flex/ext, quad sets, ham sets, heel slides, short arch quads, straignt leg raises, etc. For patients that can tolerate higher levels of activities I would have them perform stationary bike, partial lunges fwd, partial lunges sideways, partial squats, partial steps ups, weight machines, etc. Might be a good idea to consult with your MD to see if you can get PT so that you can get a plan of care tailored to your specific needs."
